It is over for now...

Updated: Jan 14, 2020

The first semester of school is coming to an end, this means it is the half way point of our design development for this capstone project. By now I have went through many sketch ideations and models and have landed on a design that I feel satisfied with visually and feel that it connects conceptually. Our fourth year capstone class got the privilege to have been able to present our developments and mock ups to Luccas Brancalion an alumni of Sheridan craft and design furniture program. This would be the first time Luccas is hearing our pitch on the capstone, so his feedback is very critical as he would be giving a new perspective to what we have been working so closely on.

I think the presentation went well for me, there were a lot of constructive criticism. For this presentation there were not a lot said about my conceptual side I think everyone saw the connection from my physical object. I made 2 out of 3 full scale mock ups, the lounge chair and the ottoman. My mock up created a conversation starter everyone reacted differently when it came to the shape/forms and the ergonomic of the pieces. The comments that resonated with me after the presentation; the seat will be covering the rail structure so the compound curve is not noticeable, is all that extra work worth it? Changing the design compound design will reduced the dramatic taper front to back will that affect the way it looks? The new seat and back rest exploration were too "edgy" needs to be more soft and round. The ottoman still needs more work the shape of the curve should mirror the lounge chair when paired together it creates an arc. Most important advice I got from the presentation is that, when I'm contemplating on what option is the best I should just make it and try them all.

How I will be moving forward into solving these questions is to go back to my design criteria and think, what are the essential visual qualities I am trying to achieve in these 3 pieces? How can I simplify the form even further in order to achieve a fully resolved set of furniture. Go back to making models to determine overall shape, I will then dimension my pieces around the ergonomics. After all this create accurate mock ups from here I can see if any last minute changes in needed, if not its time to build.
