Capstone proposal

Background

My parents were born and raised in a small village in Hong Kong. Forested mountains and the great open sea by their side gave them the freedom to be adventurous and to explore the beautiful natural world. The freedom started to disappear as reality sets in and is forced to migrate to the city and accustom themselves to this working class society.Later they immigrated to Canada and continued this life style, till they had kids, that is when it all changed. My parents miss that excitement and the thrills of the natural world, they wanted their kids to have that experience too. Growing up with wilderness loving parents I went on a lot of trips that involved the outdoors; camping, fishing, canoeing, and hiking. Nature became a part of my life style...it became a part of me.

Objective

How might I be about to create an environment that can give people a sense of connectedness back to nature; in the habitats we create for ourselves called buildings.

In an urban world of technology and industrial architecture, the fundamental human connection to the natural world is loss. My efforts will be to develop a language that could make your living experience feel as a part of "nature". This language might be expressed symbolically through forms, material, and arrangements of space and is intended to signal a sense of connectedness to their environment and bring a feeling of serenity.

The concept will be inspired and driven by a design movement that is often used in the architectural world- biophilic design. Biophilic design is a design method used as a way to harness the connectivity to the natural environment for us to live in,work in, and learn in. The first approach I will take on is through experimentation and explorations. I would like to uses this opportunity to learn steam bending techniques, and try different materials to see the affect it can have on people, using the visual qualities we are use to seeing in nature; curtain landscape, forms, and texture.

Goals

The goals I set out for myself this year is to develop a collection of work that can work together and individually as an arrangement. The furniture types I am imagining that I will explore will be seating, tables and surfaces, small table top objects.

Criteria

Must

  • Be compelling, through forms and materials or arrangements in a space.

  • Provide a sense of emotional connection to the viewer.

Should

  • Be material focused

  • Work together as a collection

Could

  • Have multiple iterations done

  • be show ready by the end of the term

Research area and topics

  • Edward 0. Wilson bioliphic design principles/methodology.

  • Previous use of Bioliphic design/designers that incorporate it into their works

  • Material manipulations

  • Emotional design

  • Visceral design
